CE BRUNCH & WORKSHOP
The Inland Empire Nurses Association (IENA) has had a busy and exciting spring. Our two-hour CE brunch and workshop on March 18th featuring speaker Connie Davis was held at the Spokane Club and was well attended. This excellent presentation "Communication for Better Collaboration," gave us insight into motivational interviewing. We were given the opportunity to practice these techniques and understand how to apply them to clinical and family settings.
The annual Spring Gala was held at the Red Lion River Inn on May 9th. After a delicious dinner, we awarded five $1,000 scholarships to recipients who are furthering their nursing education: Jamie Abrahamson, Teresa Bigand, Annalisa Brombach, Elena Butova and Cassandra Dubbels. A very special award went to Ruth Bryant, PhD, RN, CWOCN for "Excellence in Research." Ruth works on 7 South at Sacred Heart Medical Center and has been instrumental in the project to reduce compassion fatigue in oncology nurses. Following scholarship and award presentations, there was a short business meeting during which updated bylaws were passed.
The highlight of the evening was a presentation given by Eva Marquette from "Fresh Vue." Eva spoke on "Internal Clarity for External Clarity: Know What You Mean So You Mean What You Say," in which she shared some tools to enhance our ability to communicate authentically with mind sight and greater self-awareness.
ANNUAL LUC DINNER
The board of directors invited the local unit chairs (LUC) and co-chairs for our Annual LUC Dinner at Anthony's. This gave us an opportunity to hear and understand various issues important to our local unit members. Working with and serving our membership is IENA's top priority.
Your IENA board of directors has developed a new program for our members. It is called "Mini-Grant for Community Based Health Projects." To learn more about the program, click here.

Due to prudent management of our financial assets by prior Boards and Investment Committees, we are pleased to report that District 4 (IENA) is financially healthy. During 2016, our investment account realized an increase in value of nearly $10,000. Therefore, in the fall when the Board approved our 2017 budget, we all agreed that we should take that income and invest it in you, our membership. To do that we increased the amount of money budgeted for educational scholarships, and we agreed to invest up to $10,000 to help our membership attend the WSNA Convention that was held last month, May 3-5, by offering scholarships of $500-$750 per member. We are pleased to report that nine members applied for and were approved for these scholarships, which will be used to reimburse some of their expenses. Also, we just approved a plan to offer grants of up to $500 to help nurses provide community health projects. The Mini-Grant application is available on the IENA website (click here to open the application). We have agreed to fund at least three such grants per year, but if we get additional applications for these so-called "mini-grants," then the Board may agree to budget more money for these projects. Finally, we continue to provide scholarships to members to reimburse them for the cost of being certified in their area of nursing specialty (up to $300).
As of 4/30/2017, our accounts show these balances:
